Sporting News: North Carolina is looking to reload
This article from the Sporting News talks about some of the big high school prospects that were in Chapel Hill recently.
Injuries End Damion Grant's Playing Career
The news about Damion Grant not playing this year isn't terribly surprising. He has been injured most of his time at UNC. We are going to miss his big body down low this year for sure!
Brings a tear to my eye...

Schedule
The schedule is now available. You can download it in pdf form here. A few notes: - 25 of 27 games will be televised - Late Night with Roy will be Oct 14th (I've attended the last two years) - Tough non-conference games include Kentucky (away), Illinois (home), and Arizona (home) - This is a tough schedule! I imagine we'll be in the top 10 in difficulty of schedule. Let's face it, we are going to be a mediocre team this year. Expect several hard fought losses though. Being a Carolina basketball fan-atic, I will still watch every game and cheer them on. They are of course the reigning national champs until a new one is crowned. Go Heels!
Post-Bahamas reaction
Roy Quotes
I liked his comments about Copeland:
"Defensively he couldn’t guard his lunch, but there is hope there. He’s a wonderful kid with a marvelous attitude, looks right down into your soul when talking to you. If he doesn’t help us with his rebounding, then I’ll be surprised – that’s what I thought he could do, it’s the reason he’s here."
Lucas: Weekend Yields Few Revelations
"The Tar Heels have this week off from basketball but will begin the very rigorous four-week conditioning program on Sept. 15. NCAA rules also permit two hours of on-court workouts each week, but Williams prefers to save his full squad sessions for the real practices that will begin Oct. 14. Players from the 2004-05 squad (including Rashad McCants, Raymond Felton, Sean May and Marvin Williams, who will be in the middle of NBA orientation weekend but received approval from the league to be in attendance at the game) will receive their championship rings at halftime of the Wisconsin football game on Sept. 17."
Heels trying to find selves
"For one, it rained the whole time. For another "I didn't have a very good night in the casino," Williams said."
"The kids really had a chance to spend some time together," Williams said. "The relationships get better rooming with different people than you stay with at home; the older guys taking care of the freshmen and giving them some advice and that stuff. In my own opinion, that was by far the best benefit of the whole trip."
"I've never been faced with this kind of challenge or this kind of team," Williams said. "We'll probably have to take an approach where we're more patient and we've got to spend more time just on the foundation of what we believe in."
Noel has set his own goals for the season. "Our job this year is to make the tournament," he said.
Heels get preseason work in basketball
"The games, permitted under NCAA rules, were little better than pickup games, according to Williams."
Heels Win Easy in Bahamas
The Heels had a decent showing in their scrimages in the Bahamas. Noel was a real leader and played strong. Hansbrough played as advertised and shot his free throws really well! (Which I love in a big man) Copeland played surprisingly well. The point guards (Frasior, Miller, Thomas) did a decent job. Reyshawn Terry stepped up his game with a 47 point showing for the two games. Terry had flashes or brilliance last year and I'm hoping we'll see more of that this year. Ginyard Sidelined -- Surgery Successful
In a bit of bad news, freshman Marcus Ginyard broke his wrist this summer and wasn't able to play with the team in the Bahamas.
According to reports this week, his surgery was successful and should be ready when practice starts up again in October.
Q&A with the upper classmen
Q&A with David Noel
Interviews with Reshawn Terry, Quentin Thomas, and Byron Sanders
The guys sound pretty optimistic, but then again, all players are at this point. Noel said their goal will be to make the NCAA tourney and win as many games as possible. This will be a tough season and making the NCAA tourney will indeed be a good achievement.
Michael Copeland finally joins UNC
Got the good news last week that Michael Copeland has cleared all of the academic hurdles to attend UNC and play for the TarHeels. Copeland is 6'8'', 235 pounds and will add so much needed depth down low. He wasn't ranked by major recruiters, but has played in some big games during high school and should compete for some playing time this year.
